TONIGHT'S CHEESES ARE...
Barber’s 1833 Vintage Cheddar. Powerfully intense, it has a creamy texture and smooth finish. It contains naturally occurring crystals that give it a distinctive crunch. Refined sweet notes balance out its tangy sharpness. It is made using traditional starter cultures and the finest West Country milk. Aged for at least 24 months, only when one of the Barber family judges it to be outstanding does it leave the farm as 1833. A cheese with unrivalled complexity and depth, savour it as part of a cheeseboard with apples, pickled walnuts and a tankard of Somerset cider. Suggested drink: Orchard Gold cider.
Winslade is a small, soft and oozing cheese with a gentle earthiness. It is rich and gentle on the palate. Its spruce band imparts a distinctive piney note. handmade using traditional Camembert techniques with Winslade being matured for 8 weeks. Suggested drink: Palmers Gold ale or Peculiar Mr Pat Merlot
Godminster Oak-Smoked Cheyney's Fortune. Smokey and mellow, this organic oak-smoked cheddar is named after the great Godminster oaks, whose leaves are a symbol of good fortune. The cheddar itself is the same gold medal cheddar that goes into their Bruton Beauty which is then cold smoked over oak chippings sourced from sustainable woodlands. Suggested drink: Golden Cap whisky
Rutland Red. Territorial cheeses are some of the oldest recorded foods in British history, with Red Leicester traditionally crafted by farmhouse dairies as a way to use up leftover milk from Stilton production. A touch sweet, with hints of caramel, and a savoury, moreish bite, award-winning Rutland Red® is adored by everyone who tries it. This really is a very special cheese, incomparable to what you might have tried before. After it’s been filled into its mould and cloth-bound, they liberally hand butter the outside with clarified butter, before maturing it for six months. Suggested drink: Fortaleza Del Rey Tempranillo
White LakeTor is a beautifully crafted fresh lactic goat’s cheese formed into a pyramid shape with a firm texture. It has a unique rind and is lightly coated with ash to add a very subtle peppery undertone along with a combination of lemony flavours and a typical goat’s cheese ‘tang’ making it an attractive and stand-out option for any cheeseboard. Made with unpasteurised milk and vegetarian rennet. Suggested drink: Holdaway Sauvignon Blanc
Bath Blue. Made by The Bath Soft Cheese Co, a classic blue veined cheese made from the milk of their own cows, ripened for eight to ten weeks to give a creamy, tangy flavour. It follows a traditional Stilton recipe but, unlike the majority of Stiltons with a few notable exceptions, each stage is done entirely by hand. It is made in very small batches using a vat which is around half the size of even the smallest Stilton maker and then in individual buckets. In 2014, it was awarded Supreme Champion at the World Cheese Awards and is one of only six British cheeses still being made today, that has won this prestigious honour. Suggested Drink: Krohn Ambassador Port

We serve wonderful food made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients including the famous Beaminster banger from Nick Tett, the butcher just over the road from us! With the emphasis on quality and sustainability we serve lunch, including light bites, and dinner, teas, coffee and cake either in the bars or the WALLED GARDEN .

I

BEAMINSTER is a beautiful Dorset town. The Red Lion is in a conservation area and just walking the streets is a fascinating experience, seeing the gorgeous architecture (especially St Mary's church) and thriving independent shops. The peace of the open countryside is a minute away and there are endless walks and bridleways, the views are stunning. Ask us for maps and a picnic.
Beaches at Burton Bradstock and West Bay are a fifteen minute drive and that of course gives access to the rest of the spectacular Jurassic Coast .

The art gallery opened in November 2022 and has proved to be a popular addition to the pub. It exhibits a wide range of works from local artists in many media. The wonderful wood carvings of Dave Budden reflect his love of the Jurassic coast and Trai Hiscock's vibrant local scenes featuring The Seniors will always make you smile. There is other work in many media from watercolour to collage and even biro and the work of landlord Bryan Greenwood. www.BryanGreenwoodArt.com
It is open during pub hours so feel free to come and browse with a cup of tea or coffee.
The aim of the gallery is to encourage and help local artists so we don't charge a hanging fee just a small commission. If you would like to exhibit please get in touch with Bryan 01308 862364 info@theredlionbeaminster.co.uk
